There was a designer for a theatre company on Staten Island who prided himself on making the set without ever reading the play. When he said that at the first production meeting, I said, "You're kidding right? You know you have to read the play." It only got worse from that time on. What a nightmare.
When does the creative leader insist on a point of design in my own head, and when does the creative leader let the designer go forward...trusting in the process???
Set design will fall to me and possibly some direction on lights, but costumes, hair, props and especially music are going forward, not in my hands. I like this crazy.
Oh, the fourth grade girls I mentioned in yesterday's entry were fabulous. They were prepared, dressed for audition and did such a good job.
